A SOLUTION FOR TOOTH LOSS
Patients who are missing teeth or who have chipped teeth often experience pain while eating and talking. This can make it difficult to live comfortably day to day. Dr. Dimitrios Kilimitzoglou, M.A.G.D., F.I.C.O.I. offers dental implants at his Long Island-area practice as a permanent solution to this discomfort. When placed in the mouth, dental implants provide strength for daily activities, restore functionality, and produce an aesthetically-pleasing look.
If you have experienced tooth loss and are considering dental implants as a permanent solution, contact ESI Dental to schedule a consultation. We proudly serve Long Island out of our Smithtown location.
The Placement of Dental Implants
Dr. Kilimitzoglou knows that both comfort and appearance are important when it comes to oral health. Dental implants act as replacement teeth, providing functional and cosmetic benefits for patients who have lost teeth. Because dental implants are actually fused to the bone, they are an appealing and longer-lasting alternative to dentures or dental bridges.
The procedure for receiving dental implants usually takes place over several months. However, using cutting edge technology known as Noble Guide™, Dr. Kilimitzoglou drastically reduces time spent in the office. Through the use of a CT scan and computer software, dental implant surgery can be planned virtually, allowing for the most accurate results. Using the data collected by impressions and the CT scan, prosthetic teeth are created by the Noble Guide™ lab. Once the permanent teeth are received, Dr. K can place them in just one hour. He is able to do so because the CT scan allows him to see exactly where the implants should be placed, without having to completely open the gums. In addition, a template provided by Noble Guide™ Labs allows for precision implantation. Teeth-in-an-Hour™ not only saves the patient time, but it also reduces pain and swelling. Patients who undergo the procedure are typically healed within 3 to 4 days, as2 opposed to the several months of healing required with traditional dental implant surgery.
While Teeth-in-an-Hour™ is convenient, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. For those individuals who have serious decay or diminished bone health, Dr. K performs traditional implant surgery. During the first visit, Dr. Kilimitzoglou will insert a small titanium screw into the bone at the location of the missing tooth. This tiny metal piece is designed to function in the same way that a natural tooth root does. Because of its properties, the titanium is able to fuse to the bone over time, creating strength that cannot be matched through the use of traditional dental restorations such as dentures or bridges. The length of the procedure varies by patient, based upon the number of teeth being replaced. Once the implant is placed, the healing process begins. The next step in the procedure takes place when the bone has grown into the implant, typically in 3-6 months. Dr. Kilimitzoglou will then affix a replacement tooth, such as a crown, to the titanium root. This replacement tooth is altered to match the shape and color of the rest of the teeth, providing a seamless final look.
Some patients who require dental implants in the upper back portion of their mouth do not have enough bone to support the placement of an implant. Dr. Kilimitzoglou must build up this area of bone before performing the implant procedure, in order to ensure successful results. However, this is a delicate area where the sinuses are located. In these instances, Dr. Kilimitzoglou performs a procedure in which he lifts the sinuses, creating room for bone to be regenerated. This makes the area more stable to support an implant.
Experience the Benefits of Dental Implants
Patients who have lost teeth who receive dental implants experience a noticeable difference in daily life. Tooth pain that patients may have experienced prior to the surgery is often eliminated. In addition, because the implant restores strength in the teeth, patients can enjoy certain foods that they may have had to previously give up. Dental implants also contribute to the attractiveness of the smile by closing gaps and providing a completed look. This allows patients to feel confident in showing their teeth. Perhaps the most important benefit, however, is that dental implants contribute to overall oral health. When the gaps created by lost teeth are left untreated, it can contribute to decay, bacteria buildup, tooth shifting, misalignment, and gum disease. The procedure for dental implants removes any decay and prevents further oral health complications. Dental implants are a safe and effective way to create a healthy, beautiful smile.
